Will my mom have to move out of assisted living if her medical needs change?

This depends on the home you choose and their ability to accommodate your changing needs. When someone has to move to a higher level of care it is generally to a skilled nursing facility. This typically occurs when someone has been hospitalized for an acute illness, and the social worker, facility staff or a family member sees that mom is not doing so well and might require more care. At such a time, all reponsible parties discuss what is best for the resident. If it is at all possible and safe, the assisted living facility staff will try to have them return back home to their facility - for that is what it is, their home.
