In most assisted living facilities, when
a resident runs out of money, they will be quite sympathetic
but at the same time inform you that you should probably start
looking
for
a more affordable home. This can be very unsettling; your mom
has made friends, she is comfortable with the staff and you are
happy
with
the care. This is why such questions should be addressed beforehand.
Inquire as to what kind of rates are involved and
how long
your mom will be able to afford it. There
are many homes that guarantee that if money runs out, they
will help your mom apply for SSI and either take that as full
or supplemental payment.
I have even found homes that I know will never ask a resident
to leave when they
run out of funds - they are rare, but they are out there. This
is my job: to find you a home where you will never have
to worry about this problem.
