I hear a lot about "community fees." What are they?

Community fees are a one-time fee that many assisted living facilities charge, usually equal to one month's rent, which may be for "administration costs" or property maintenance. Many assisted living facilities have been confronted about their "community fees." Generally, you can negotiate these fees and, in some cases, have the fees waived. Keep in mind that these facilities want and need your family members to move in in order for them to stay in business. Always negotiate!
